Introduction to Pranayama (Yogic Breathing Techniques) – 6 Week Course

The word pranayama consists of two parts: praṇa, which is our vital life force or energy embodied in the breath, and ayama which means to stretch or extend. To deepen our yoga asana and meditation practice, it is essential to understand the basics of the breath.

In our asana (physical yoga) practice, we focus on opening and strengthening the body. This allows us to sit for longer periods of time to meditate upon the breath. Our breath then becomes the gateway to working with our prana and more advanced yogic practices.

In this course, we will explore:
– The different types of prana within the body
– Fundamental pranayama practices
– Using pranayama to deepen your yoga and meditation practice
– How to integrate pranayama into everyday life

Pranayama provides the following benefits:
– Helps to ease stress, anxiety and tension
– Helps manage depression, dullness and lethargy
– Assists in building concentration, will power and sound judgement
– Stimulates autonomic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous systems
– Helps in weight regulation and smooth digestion
– Helps in lungs expansion and improves breathing efficiency

No previous yoga experience required for this course. Open to everyone.
